DBK’s Guide to Denver

December 7th, 2016

I have to admit, for someone who thought she would never leave Dallas, I have fallen in love hard with Colorado.  There are so many things to see and do. This is a blog I’ve wanted to write for a long time (and I’m hoping my other fellow locals will do the same!). Today I’m sharing my list of personal favorites and bests for the city of Denver.

BEST HAIR SALON

I’ve taken research of this topic probably a bit too far, but I’ve finally landed on my favorite.  Lisa Sackman at Posh Salon in Cherry Creek gives the best haircuts.  My mom also goes to her for color.  She’s adorable, talented and not terribly difficult to get into.  Call (303) 333-3750.

BEST BLOW OUT

If you have an event or need in a rush, we are thankfully with the times and finally got a Drybar. If you’ve never been, it’s fabulous. Who doesn’t want to sit back and sip a latte while someone else does your hair? You can book an appointment for their Cherry Creek location here.

BEST STYLIST

If you’ve never tried Nordstrom’s free styling service, YOU ARE MISSING OUT.  It’s free, and no it’s not a weird high pressure situation. Maribeth at Park Meadows will take your budget, load up a room with snacks and fabulous outfits and leave you to it.  I freaking love her. Give it a try!

BEST BRUNCH

This one I’ve also taken a little too far in the research department, but hey, brunch is my favorite meal of the day. If you’re new or visiting, you have to hit Denver Biscuit Company, Snooze and Syrup.  And Second Home… and maybe Lucile’s

BEST SUSHI

I realize we are nowhere close to water, so maybe this terrifies you.  Sushi is one of my very favorite meals (no matter where we are). If you’re looking for sushi on the cheap, Land of Sushi in Cherry Knolls is surprisingly fabulous.  Our friends introduced us and we have been going quite a bit. You also can’t beat Sushi Den on Pearl Street.

BEST ICE CREAM

I recently tried Sweet Cow after many recommendations from my co-workers and it was fantastic. I also love Sweet Action and Little Man is a Denver staple (especially after you go to a Rockies game). Great atmosphere and ridiculous ice cream.

BEST SHOPPING

Larimer Square is a really fun place to take company for dinner or boutique shopping. Make sure you stop in The Market for a latte while you’re perusing. Cherry Creek is also a Denver staple and now has some of my favorite Dallas stores (like Kendra Scott, Kate Spade and West Elm).

COFFEE SHOPS

I’m not going to lie, I LOVE a cold brew with sweet cream from Starbucks.  When you’re not in the mood for semi-burnt coffee, I would head to Pablo’s or Black Eye Coffee.

BEST PLACES TO ENTERTAIN GUESTS

It’s no secret I’m slightly obsessed with Union Station.  It’s new rennovation is beyond fantastic and chock full of local Denver vendors. You can grab Little Man ice cream or an iconic burger from The Kitchen Next Door after you marvel at the amazing lobby. A Rockies Game is always a good idea (especially with our climate) and like I said, love a stroll in Larimer Square.

BEST PARKS

You really cannot beat Denver’s weather, and come Spring or Summer the city is full of fabulous parks. Wash Park, Cheeseman, City Park and Sloan’s Lake are just a few personal favorites.

BEST HIKES NEAR THE CITY

This one may fall more into my co-worker’s personal favorites, but there are plenty of places close to the city to hike on your spare time. Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Roxborough and The Flat Irons are some great choices.

What are your personal Denver bests?
