FAQ: What should I place above my cabinets?

April 22nd, 2013

One of the design questions I get asked the most is:

What should I place over my kitchen cabinets?

The answer surprises and disappoints almost everyone.

I cannot stand a cluster of randomness over perfectly beautiful cabinetry.  Don’t get me started on fake ivy either.

It is a disgusting dust collector. You know you’re not going to climb up your countertop with your Swiffer to remedy that! Don’t kid yourself.  Also, who in real life would want ivy growing above their dish storage? It’s just weird, kids.  Weird.

So the next time you’re in Kirklands and fake ivy is 50% off, walk away.  There’s nothing wrong with that blank space.

Thank goodness my kitchen cabinets go to the ceiling, but what about the space above built-in bookshelves? I have an entire wall of built-ins in our family room and currently have random funky antique things up there. Feel free to do a post on staging bookshelves! We are getting our house ready to sell, and if I took our personal photos off the bookshelves they would be pretty sparse.

Oh my Katy, we are on the same page!! When we sold our Tennessee home, our stager sold me on the idea of less(or none) is more when dealing with silk flowers. You are spot on gal!! I am loving your blog.
